Galactic Empire

Role Memorial Ship

About the IMS Eternal

Within the Imperial Military, there exists an adage that "Imperial Officers never die, they just get put on an eternal patrol". The IMS Eternal serves as the final assignment for any Imperials who pass away while in service to the Galactic Empire.

As the dedicated memorial ship for the Galactic Empire, the IMS Eternal memorializes those officers who sacrifice themselves for the Empire "in-character" and also those players who pass away "out-of-character" while serving as Imperials.

Service History

Originally commissioned as the flagship of Task Force Diamond, the IMS Eternal began her service as the IMS Brevity under the command of Admiral Oriphan Tourville. Following several minor engagements with rebel forces over six years, the IMS Brevity led a Task Group in an assault in the Antares system against a rebel splinter group known as the New Corvell Guards. Unbeknownst to Admiral Tourville, the New Corvell Guards had fit several "planet-killer" asteroids with modified hyperdrive motivators in a trap for the Task Group.

The initial assault on the Antares system was successful, with Imperial Stormtroopers capturing key locations on the ice-moon of Antares IV and the IMS Brevity executing a Base Delta Zero (BDZ) protocol against the dissidents on Antares VII. It was after the final BDZ attack, before the IMS Brevity had a chance to divert power from weapons to shields, that the New Corvell Guards struck.

By energizing the hyperdrive motivators but not triggering the final jump to lightspeed, the New Corvell Guards were able to accelerate the kilometers-wide asteroids to a large fraction of lightspeed for a kinetic strike. All but one large asteroid missed the IMS Brevity but a single glancing hit was enough to cause catastrophic damage.

Admiral Tourville and his staff, along with 91,364 other Imperial servicemembers and civilians were killed instantly.

The remainder of the Task Group immediately descended upon the asteroid's point of origin, avenging the death of their Task Force Commander and the thousands of lives lost on the damaged Super Star Destroyer. It was only with the assistance of the attached RADE mobile repair units that the IMS Brevity was able to eventually limp to Kuat for a drydock assessment.

After months of evaluation, the Resource Allocation Division - Empire, the Imperial Military, and Regional Government made a joint decision that the ship had been damaged irreparably. While it would be possible to dismantle and recycle the IMS Brevity, such an action would take years of time, tens of thousands of workers, and tie up valuable drydock space in Kuat. Because of the sacrifices of the thousands of Imperials who gave their lives in the Antares Liberation Campaign, among whom was represented every branch of the Galactic Empire, a proposal was sent to the Throne to request that the IMS Brevity be redesignated as a memorial ship.

In early Y25, the Throne gave their approval and the IMS Brevity was reflagged as the IMS Eternal in a solemn ceremony attended by the families of key representatives among the fallen. The IMS Eternal has been demilitarized and now maintains a heliosynchronous orbit near Kuat and is crewed by retired Imperial officers on half-pay.
